Trying

Being thankful should be so easy. I know all the things I have to be thankful for, and yet I find myself wanting to complain all the time and having a hard time not being cranky all the time. This week I have been especially irritated at everything, pretty much all the time.

I was/am irritated that my B-H contractions turned to real contractions and then no baby. I’m irritated that Eila and Josiah aren’t perfect and that my house is constantly in need of cleaning and we always need to eat. I should be thankful that we have a really nice house and lots of toys and art projects to make messes with and plenty of food to eat. I should also be thankful that baby boy is developing perfectly and that my body is getting ready for labor. I should be thankful, and I’m trying… sort of.

Those last few weeks of pregnancy are the hardest! You are uncomfortable and anxious to see your new little son. Two preschoolers can be challenging for all parents at times even when they are as wonderful as your two children. Don’t worry about all the small things!

Shan, remember the act of trying is an accomplishment in itself. You recognize what you desire to change. Thankfulness is a process…and you are doing a good job. Don’t focus on big picture; go for small things. Be thankful that the kids remember to flush the toilet and put their shoes on the correct feet…be thankful when B walks in five minutes earlier than you expect. You feel uncomfortable, your pooped out, and you are ready to meet the new little man. I think you are plenty thankful considering all you are going through (baby turning, two preschoolers, MOPS, leadership, etc.) and you need to give yourself a break and some credit. Remember, thankful for the small things. On a friends blog, there’s this quote….”No moment from my God is a rock of burden, it’s just a rock waiting to be broken apart into stepping stones.” One thankful moment, one step at a time.
